I don't know about you, but watching television is a luxury for me so when Fall TV time rolls around, I am very intentional about the handful of shows I try to catch in real time because I know its so limited with my children's busy schedules. I love medical shows you guys! I am like obsessed! I live through television doctors and my Kick - Ass Female cousin Doctors!
Just as fate would have it, I teamed up with NBC for a private viewing of a new TV drama series called New Amsterdam. The show is partially based on the REAL LIFE oldest public hospital in the United Stated, Bellevue Hospital, which is located in New York City (Manhattan). Bellevue is known for a bunch of FIRSTS including the first Maternity Ward (INSERT FEMINIST HAND PUMP!) in the United States which opened in 1799! They were even the first to report that Tuberculosis was a preventable disease. I just wanted to set the tone to help you understand how important the hospital is to the country and history. Additionally, "New Amsterdam" is inspired by Dr. Eric Manheimer's memoir, "Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital," and his 15 years as medical director at the hospital.”
Now on the the new series…
“This unique medical drama follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin, the institution's newest medical director, who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. How can he help? Well, the doctors and staff have heard this before. Not taking "no" for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital - the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the president of the United States under one roof - and return it to the glory that put it on the map. (NBC’s Synopsis)”
My Thoughts
I absolutely loved the pilot episode! There is drama and more drama! Not to mention it gives you insight as to some of the bureaucracy that medical professionals are faced with when treating patients. I think this show is one that sets the tone for real life doctors to take a look at how they are practicing and ask themselves are they TRULY helping the patients with care. Additionally, I enjoyed the character development that took place which helps us get to know the characters beyond the workplace. Let me just say Dr. Goodwin is not for the BS! He is trying to bring about change and impact lives and I am not mad at that!
