Baby's Home...Tips That Helped Me

Writer: ErickaEricka

So, the baby is home and your nursery is waiting on you and baby to start tumbling things around. I know, if you are a first time mom or you haven't had a baby in a while, you have dreamt of this moment! I have some advice for you that may help your postpartum recovery during this time. Although you are eager to use your nursery, there is a chance you may not do so just yet during the beginning weeks (one or two weeks). This is because there is a chance you had a c-section, perineal tearing or you are just recovering. Since this is the case, you will be more comfortable for a week or two handling diapering, soothing baby and feeding baby probably in your bedroom. If you are breastfeeding this is probably where you will be pumping too.

So what should you do?

I would suggest, setting up shop in your bedroom for a week until you begin to become acclimated with the frequent trips to the bathroom, changing baby and bottle making. Or setting up shop in an area where you feel you will spend the most of your time resting is suitable. Doing this will save you a lot of pain (trust me!). Creating a changing station that is near bedside will be helpful for you considering you will be changing baby a lot! I have a basket next to my bed with diapers for my infant and two year old. Also, the wipe warmer is on my nightstand for easy access, you may want to consider doing this as well. Remember this setup is temporary until you are feeling a little better with the constant back and forth to the nursery. Next, I have a "pumping station" set up in my room so that I can sit comfortably on my couch and pump while still keeping my eyes on baby. My advice would be to set the pump up somewhere it can stay connected so that you do not need to constantly move it around. Also, you want it to be near a TV (LOL!) you can get a little lonely listening to the sound of milk being pumped from your body. Finally, I have a rock and play next to the bed for baby to sleep in. Now, if you have a plan to have a nursery center, PERFECT! You can set it up in your room and you are set. I op't out of using one (no reason really besides limited space.) Again, remember these are just my recommendations because I found they were helpful for me the first couple of weeks. It's a temporary set up so, no need to feel that your beautiful nursery is a waste. Remember you have to take care of mommy so you can take care of baby.

Congratulations on your new addition!
